The Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER) has announced the five acclaimed architects and designers who will serve on the jury for the 2022 edition of the Tile of Spain Awards.
This year’s panel is led by Eric Parry, founder and director of Eric Parry Architects. Judging alongside Parry is Luis Rojo, co-founder of Rojo/Fernández-Shaw Arquitectos, José Juan Barba Editor-in-Chief of Metalocus, Agnès Blanch co-founder of estudi Vilablanchy Ángel Pitarch President of the Colegio Territorial de Arquitectos de Castellón (CTAC).
About the Jury
Eric Parry (Eric Parry Architects)
Eric Parry founded his architecture and design studio in 1983 after studying architecture at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, the Royal College of Art in London and the Architectural Association in London.
As an architect, Parry is regarded for the intellectual rigor with which he approaches each project and particularly for the dialogue between tectonics and materiality. He currently leads a practice of 100 design professionals with offices in London and Singapore. Parry is fully involved in all aspects of the studio’s work from inception through leading project teams, design development and delivery.
In addition to his work in architectural practice, Eric has held several eminent positions. In 2006 he was elected a Royal Academician, one of the highest honors for a practicing architect or artist in the UK.
Luis Rojo (Rojo/Fernández-Shaw Arquitectos)
Luis Rojo de Castro co-founded the architecture studio, Rojo/Fernández-Shaw Arquitectos in Madrid, Spain in 1997. The Studio has oriented its practice towards public works and architecture competitions, having created theaters, archives, cultural centers, schools, sports centers and libraries for various public institutions.
Rojo obtained a Master’s in Architecture at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and a Doctorate in the Department of Projects at the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid.
José Juan Barba (Metalocus)
Earning his Ph.D. in Architecture at the Higher Technical School of Architecture (ETSA) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, José Juan Barba is a celebrated architect and writer who has lent his credentials to remarkable projects around the world.
In addition to founding his own architecture practice, Barba is an architecture critic and the editor-in-chief of METALOCUS Magazine. He has been a lecturer (in Design, Theory and Criticism, and Urban planning) and guest lecturer at different national and international universities (Roma TRE, Polytechnic Milan, ETSA Madrid, ETSA Barcelona, UNAM Mexico, Univ. Iberoamericana Mexico, University of Thessaly Volos, FA de Montevideo, Washington, Medellin, IE School, U.Alicante, Univ. Europea Madrid, UCJC Madrid, ESARQ-U.I.C. Barcelona).
Agnès Blanch (estudi Vilablanch)
Agnès Blanch is an Interior Architect, who received formal training from the Massana School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. Since 1995 Blanch has been working as an interior designer, carrying out interior architecture projects, housing restoration and execution of works.
In 1999, together with her partner Elina Vilá, Blanch launched the estudi Vilablanch, an interior design studio whose philosophy focuses on respect for space, rationality, functionality and aesthetic purity. After more than 20 years of experience and having carried out numerous projects in different parts of the world, vilablanch has established itself as a reference studio in the design sector, with various works awarded at both national and international levels.
Ángel Pitarch (CTAC)
Ángel Pitarch received his Master’s in Conservation of Architectural Heritage from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and is currently President of the Territorial College of Architects of Castellón (CTAC) in Castellón, Spain. Pitarch has an acclaimed career that integrates his education in architecture with his interest in teaching the subject, starting as a professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia during the academic 2000/2001. He currently teaches Technical Architecture and the Master of Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at the Universitat Jaume I (UJI). Pitarch is also the director of UJI’s Ceramic Classroom and Chair of Circular Architecture. When he’s not in the classroom, Pitarch spends his time researching, with a specialized focus on ceramic cladding materials, sustainable binders and architectural heritage.
