The Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER) has announced the five highly regarded architects and designers who will make up the jury for the 22nd annual Tile of Spain Awards.
The 2023 jury will be chaired by Carme Pinós, an award winning architect and founder of Estudio Carme Pinós. Alongside Pinós, the jury is comprised of Inma Bermúdez, founder of Studio Inma Bermúdez, Jesús Olivares, of COR Asociados Arquitectos, Gracia Cardona, director of Diario Design Magazine and Susana Babiloni, director of the College Territory of Architecture of Castellón.
About the Jury
Carme Pinós
Before beginning her prosperous career, Carme Pinós graduated from Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB) in 1979. She returned to school in 1981 to study Urbanism before entering a partnership with Enric Miralles. After working alongside Miralles and receiving international recognition for projects such as Igualada Cemetery Park, Pinós founded her own studio in 1991, Estudio Carme Pinós.
Known for her work on distinguished projects across the world, Pinós has taken lead on designs including the Plaze de la Gardunya, the Massana Art School, the rear façade of Mercado de la Boquería, the Caixaforum Cultural Center and many more.
Pinós has received numerous awards, recognitions and mentions, including the Prat de la Riba Award (2023), the Arnold W. Brunner Award (2022) and the Essentially Mallorca Award (2022) to name a few. Combining her love for architecture with teaching, Pinós has served as a visiting professor at some of the most prestigious universities in the world; UC Berkeley, l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris-Val de Seine et Paris-Malaquais, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and Columbia University of NY.
Inma Bermúdez
Dedicated to sustainability and the environment, Inma Bermúdez established her studio, Studio Inma Bermúdez, in 2007, with a strong respect for manufacturing processes, materials and the use of products. Each project Bermúdez undertakes exudes a core aesthetic of elegance enhanced by refined geometries that convey the essence of everyday.
Before founding her practice, Bermúdez studied at the School of Industrial Design of the University Cardenal Herrera CEU in Valencia. She began her professional career in industrial design, working for German design studios Idea, Busse Design and Prodesign. In 2006, Bermúdez collaborated with internationally-known Swedish brand IKEA, working as a freelance designer on a number of products.
Jesús Olivares
Jesús Olivares is a founding partner of COR Asociados Arquitectos alongside Miguel Rodenas. Together, Olivares and Rodenas have established an award-winning studio whose projects inspire innovation and growth in the sustainable sector. In addition to running COR Asociados Arquitectos, Olivares has been invited as a professor and lecturer at multiple academic and private institutions, from the University of Alicante to the University of Colombia.
Throughout his career, Olivares’ work has earned several honors and awards. Some of his achievements include accolades from respected platforms such as Arquia Próxima (2008/09 and 2010/11 editions), COACV Awards Official College of Architects of the Valencian Community and the Ceramic Award in the category of Architecture awarded by ASCER in 2011.
In 2019, Olivares and Rodenas, were finalists in the 18th ASCER Ceramic Awards for their reform intervention for the Museum of Natural Collections of the University of Alicante. This project has also been nominated for the Work of the Year Awards – ODA2020. Olivares and Rodenas have also been selected for the Recent Architecture Exhibition in Alicante 2018-2019 of the CTAA in the new construction category.
Gracia Cardona
Gracia Cardona graduated from the University of Barcelona from 1990, shortly before receiving her MBA from IESE Business School. Cardona previously served as the President of the nonprofit The Fostering Arts and Design, an organization dedicated to promoting design and architecture in Spain’s cultural and economic life.
Today, Cardona is the director of Diario Design, a renowned online magazine dedicated to design and architecture. The magazine publishes daily updates and news related to these industries, from the inauguration of hotels abroad to exhibitions in New York, all without forgetting architecture projects in Spain and compositions created by young Spanish professionals.
Susana Babiloni
After studying architecture at Valencia Polytechnic University, Susana Babiloni received her Master’s Degree in Marketing and Market Research from Jaume I University, as well as a degree in Advertising Graphics from the EASD Castelló.
Babiloni has been working as an architect at her own studio since 2012, focusing on building works and real estate valuation. In addition to her career as an architect, Babiloni is part of the drafting team of the ARRU document for the elaboration of the PGOU of Castellón and an adviser for urban planning. She has taken her professional knowledge and love of the industry to teach technical courses at the university level. Most recently, Babiloni was appointed President of the Castellón Territorial College of Architects (CTAC).
