STATE OF THE INDUSTRY

During Tile of Spain’s annual Press Conference, held on the second day of the exhibition, Vicente Nomdedeu, President of The Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturer’s Association (ASCER), reported on the tenacity of Spain’s ceramic sector, providing insight on 2023 production, sales and exports figures.

Spain continues to lead production within the European Union, with over $432 million in domestic ceramic tile sales. With approximately 70% of all sales made abroad, Spain currently exports to 189 countries worldwide with a total export sales of more than $3.5 billion.

FEATURED TRENDS FOR 2024

The anticipation surrounding the 2024 edition of CEVISAMA was tangible, as over 70,000 industry professionals from across the globe navigated the exhibition floor to explore the latest innovations from over 500 exhibitors. Throughout the four-day event, Spanish tile manufacturers showcased ground-breaking advancements in production methods and technologies, unveiling a new era of ceramic excellence. Below is a preview of the pioneering technologies and trends highlighted by select companies participating in Tile of Spain USA’s prestigious “Passport to Creativity” tour:

PRIMAL INSTINCT

The evolution of ceramic production technology is a testament to the artistry and innovation of modern tile manufacturing. Spanish companies are leading the industry with high-definition and multi-step printing systems to encapsulate the essence of organic matter and transport them upon ceramic surfaces. This technological leap has given rise to new collections characterized by intricate wood grain patterns, hyper-realistic marble veining, rugged natural stone textures and even the gentle movement of water. These elemental embellishments forge authentic reliefs that are virtually indistinguishable from its origin counterparts.

 CERLAT, Montesa
EXAGRES, Lizana

IRIDESCENT INFLUX

Hints of metallics and prismic overlays are conjuring a newfound sense of magic among emerging ceramic collections. These soft, but striking details are achieved through novel printing methods that cast a shimmering, rainbow-like effect on the tiles. Whether used as an accent or installed as stand-alone cladding, these pieces offer a distinct visual experience, as the chromatic brilliance of each tile transforms with varying degrees of light and vantage points.

APARICI, Abstra
 KERABEN, Idyllic

FEELING BLUE

A subtle yet significant shift is rising within this year’s dominating ceramic colorway. While muted neutrals continue to hold sway, there is a noticeable gravitational pull towards shades of blue. From deep navy and warm teal to supple aqua, ceramic tiles touched by this serene tonal range evoke an emotional response as they set the foundation for calm and tranquil atmospheres, indoors and out. Responding to the allure of azure, manufacturers are introducing a diverse array of blue tiles in an assortment of formats, finishes, textures and patterns.

CERÁMICA MAYOR, Tropic
GAYAFORES, Deco Allure

LIGHTLY GLAZED

Spanish manufacturers are experimenting with new ceramic fields like never before as they adopt new “selective” glazing styles. This departure from traditional uniform glossing entails the careful application of glazes or glues to a particular area of the tile and re-firing at lower temperatures to achieve the desired effect. The juxtaposition of matte or natural finishes with strategically placed notes of glaze creates a kinetic interplay of light, shadow and depth.

 GRESPANIA, Distrito
 REALONDA, Tetuan

BRICK-BY-BRICK

Renowned for its classical appeal, the subway tile has witnessed a revival in recent years. As ceramic design ventures into a new era, this iconic format is being reimagined with a distressed brick-like veneer that exudes industrial charm. These tiles replicate the architectural appeal of traditional bricks with their tactile irregularity, Earthy hues and geometric draw.

 EQUIPE, Fango
NATUCER, Cotto Brick

UNDULATING TENDENCIES

Curved surfaces are making a splash in the realm of interior design, with gentle contours inspired by movements found in nature. Ceramics etched with deep grooves, structured fluting and beveled details subtly ebb and flow, permeating environments in a wave-like pattern. Beyond adding visual intrigue, these tiles enhance the overall optics and acoustics of a space, establishing a harmonious blend of form and function.

On the 12th edition of the annual “Passport to Creativity” tour, Tile of Spain USA warmly welcomed a talented cohort of architects, interior designers and journalists to Valencia, Spain, for an immersive dive into the world of Spanish ceramics. Throughout the week-long trip, our guests not only engrossed themselves in Spanish tile from a design perspective but also from a historic and fabrication viewpoint as well. From venturing the charming streets and architectural wonders of Valencia’s Old City to touring the show floor of Cevisama and even witnessing ceramic manufacturers’ factories in action, our 4-day expedition was well spent discovering the latest Spanish ceramic innovations, trends and technologies straight from the source!

Day One: Architectural Tour of Valencia and Welcome Dinner

Our Spanish adventure commenced on Monday, February 26th with an architectural tour of Valencia guided by architect Adrian Torres Astaburuaga. Our group spent the day discovering the rich history of the Old City, admiring the modernity of the City of Arts & Sciences Complex, marveling at the Silk Exchange and enjoying horchata at Horchatería Santa Catalina.

In the evening, our attendees received an exclusive tour of the Hortensia Herrero Art Centre, where they had the opportunity to admire contemporary art across 17 different exhibition spaces. After viewing all the exhibits, our guests were treated to dinner at Mercado de lam Imprenta, courtesy of the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association (ASCER).

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Cevisama, the press conference began with a presentation on design trends over the last four decades, followed by a speech from President of ASCER, Vicente Nomdedeu, regarding the current state of the Spanish ceramic industry. The press conference concluded with the recognition of the winners of the 22nd annual Tile of Spain Awards.

We continued our day at Cevisama exploring tile trends and innovations with Arcana, Peronda, Museum Surfaces, Harmony Inspire, Apavisa, Aparici, Vives, Ceramica Mayor, Exagres y Natucer.

Our night came to a close at the Cevisama 40th Anniversary Gala, where we joined fellow tile enthusiasts in celebrating 40 years of Cevisama with libations and hors d’oeuvres.

Day Three: Factory and Showroom Tours

On the third day of the “Passport to Creativity” tour, our party journeyed from Valencia to Castellón, where we spent the day with Grespania, Cevica and Living Ceramics.

Our first stop was at the Grespania factory, where we got a first-hand look at the manufacturing of large format tile. After learning about the production process, we visited Grespania’s showroom to admire the finished products! We enjoyed tapas, coffee and engaging conversation about their newest and most popular collections.

Our next destination was the Cevica factory and showroom, where we uncovered the alluring charm, versatility and artistry behind small-size tiles. For our third and final stop of the day, our group headed to Living Ceramics, where we had the opportunity to explore their showroom while enjoying light refreshments.

Day Four: CEVISAMA and Farewell Dinner

On the final day of the “Passport to Creativity” tour, we returned to Cevisama. In the morning, we walked the booths of Roca, Gresmanc, Cerlat, Equipe, Halcón, EMAC y Gayafores before breaking for lunch.

After lunch, the remainder of the afternoon at Cevisama was spent visiting the booths of Realonda, Undefasa, Alttoglass, Mainzu y El molino.

On our last night together, our attendees ventured into Valencia’s Old City, relishing in some shopping and sightseeing before our farewell dinner at Deli Rant. At dinner, we all reminisced about our cherished adventures and memories from the 2024 “Passport to Creativity” tour.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY

During the Tile of Spain Press Conference, held on the first day of the fair, Vicente Nomdedeu, President of The Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturer’s Association (ASCER), echoed the strength of Spain’s ceramic sector, reporting on 2022 production, sales and exports figures.

The Spanish tile industry surpassed expectations with overall sales increasing by 16.2% since last year. With approximately 50% of all sales made abroad, Spain currently exports to 187 countries worldwide with a total export growth of 16.6% since 2021.

FEATURED TRENDS FOR 2023

The excitement for the 2023 edition of CEVISAMA was palpable as more than 90,000 industry professionals from around the world traversed the exhibition floor to indulge in cutting-edge novelties from over 800 exhibitors. During the four-day show, Spanish tile makers pulled out all the stops, with new production methods and technologies making way for a ground-breaking class of ceramic sensations. The following provides a glimpse of the innovations and trends showcased by some of companies featured on Tile of Spain USA’s “Passport to Creativity” program:

ON FUEGO

The diversity of ceramic design is ever prevalent as Spanish companies continue to test new production techniques. Manufacturers are building complex glazed surfaces by putting a single piece of tile through the kiln three to four times. While this approach requires a deep understanding of materials and a touch of patience, the repetitious firing process conceives a multi-surfaced finish that is simply breathtaking.

APARICI, Kintsugi
CERÁMICA SALONI,
Foundry Crosby

TIMELESS TERRACOTTA

Spanish tile makers are returning to their natural roots to celebrate the beauty of terracotta. New iterations of this timeless look are receiving a dose of modern edge, with anti-slip properties, profound textures and arresting decorative adornments. This new aesthetic reflects the raw side of ceramics and their pure composition while upping the ante of its craftsmanship.

NATUCER, Argile
CERACASA, Livorno Terracotta

ALL THAT GLITTERS

Interior surfaces receive the full glamour treatment with ceramic applications dripping in opulence. Straddling the line between classic and contemporary, collections enhanced by metallic gold and nickel overlays set a near-ethereal scene.

IBERO, Mystic Occitaine
VIVES CERÁMICA, Ritmo

RICH AND ROUGHED

With vivid hues prevailing over neutrals for the first time in years, Spanish manufacturers are itching to make a statement by employing a chromatic range stoked by this year’s “it” color, red. Passion and power converge in ceramic pieces large and small, with pops of fiery scarlets and blush undertones, feeding the desire to curate fearless spaces.

PERONDA, FS Road
HALCÓN, Terra

SHAPE SHIFTERS

Pushing the boundaries, ceramic artisans are experimenting with geometric formats like never before. Tantalizing sequences in alternating shapes forge a playground where creativity thrives, while modular formats allow avant-garde silhouettes to become more than just a decorative statement, transforming large-scale surfaces into conversation pieces.

ARCANA, Cliff Positano
REALONDA, Triangle

ADVANCED FACADES AND EXTERIOR SOLUTIONS

Ceramic facades and external trimmings set the bar for safety and sustainable standards extraordinarily high. When installed correctly, they provide protection from extreme weather conditions, offer ample insulation and eliminate the need for excessive heat and air conditioning use. Moreover, state-of-the-art facades create small pockets along the exterior of a building or home, establishing a high-performing ventilation system with continuous airflow, offering energy savings and a reduction in the carbon footprint of public and private habitats.

Tile of Spain, the international brand representing more than 100 ceramic tile manufacturers belonging to the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturer’s Association (ASCER), is now accepting entries for the 2023 edition of the “Passport to Creativity” tour.

Now in its eleventh year, “Passport to Creativity” celebrates the profound history of Spanish ceramics by inviting a select group of architects and interior designers on a journey through Spain. Attendees will gain a thorough understanding of the origins of ceramics, how they are made and the technical and aesthetic benefits of the different genres of tile.

This year’s tour will take place in late February 2023, with exact dates to be announced. Attendees will begin the week traversing the exhibition floor of Cevisama, the International Tile and Bath Furnishing Show in Valencia, Spain. Following the show, participants will tour ceramic manufacturing facilities, explore historical sites and experience a taste of Spanish culture, all while earning CEU credits.

“Passport to Creativity offers architects and designers the opportunity to master the nuances of Spanish ceramic tile from manufacturers and tile specialists first-hand,” states Rocamador Rubio, at Tile of Spain in the United States. “Our guests will embark on an educational journey that begins with the history of ceramics and concludes with a deeper understanding of the aesthetic, technical and functional benefits of Spanish tile. This knowledge can then be used to enhance and evolve their designs to meet the ever-changing needs of exterior and interior projects.”

If you are an architect or designer interested in attending this year’s trip or would like additional information, Tile of Spain invites you to fill out the “Passport to Creativity” interest form, aquí.
