Tile of Spain, the international brand representing more than 100 ceramic tile manufacturers belonging to the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER) announces the winners of the 23rd annual Tile of Spain Awards of Architecture and Interior Design. A distinguished panel of judges, led by renowned architect Rafael de La-Hoz Castanys, came together at ASCER’s headquarters in late November to evaluate this year’s project submissions and select winners across three categories: Architecture, Interior Design and Master’s Thesis Project.

Winning Projects:

Architecture:

“A Circular Viewpoint” by Javier López Bautista

Perched on a former threshing floor overlooking the Mijares River reservoir in Puebla de Arenoso, Castellón, Valencian architect Javier López Bautista has crafted A Circular Viewpoint, an observation area that serves as both a refuge and a space for reflection. This circular structure creates a dialogue between the site’s memory and its present, encouraging visitors to pause and connect with the landscape. Through its panoramic design and descending steps, the viewing point seamlessly integrates with the terrain, offering a contemplative experience in harmony with nature.

The jury praised the way in which the tile materials forged more direct ties with the surroundings, creating a sense of communion between human beings and the earth beneath our feet.

Architecture Special Mentions:

Dosmurs House” by Mesura Arquitectura and “Camino de Baldosas Amarillas” by La Errería.

Interior Design:

Hill House by studioNOLET

Built in the 1980s, Hill House is a petite single-family home nestled in the hills of Catalonia, Spain. Recently sold for the first time, the home has been revitalized by the design team at studioNOLET. The multi-level layout now features a staircase and pool area that seamlessly connect the split-level living space and terrace to the garden below, while interior updates enhance functionality and create a more dynamic living environment.

Here, the panel of judges highlighted the expressive geometrical and chromatic interplay of ceramic materials, shunning any kind of uniformity.

Interior Design Special Mentions:

A Home in Guardamar del Segura” by Bernardo Cerrato Hernández and “Home 9/3” by CAVAA Arquitectes.

Master’s Thesis Project:

A Post-Extractivisit Retreat. A Spa and Leasure Center in Sierra de La Culebra by Álvaro Pozo Pérez (CEU San Pablo University in Madrid)

The jury noted the expressive use of tiles, applied like scales to resolve very complex geometries in a project that takes into account sustainability by re-using agricultural and fisheries waste as a source of energy for a modern concept of leisure and wellbeing.

Master’s Thesis Project Special Mention:

A Sensory Refuge” by Tais Gianella Guevara Lima (CEU San Pablo University in Madrid).

The Judges

The 2024 panel of judges was led by architect Rafael de La-Hoz Castanys (Rafael De La-Hoz), who served alongside José González Gallegos (Aranguren+Gallegos), Jonathan Arnabat and Jordi Ayala-Bril (Arquitectura G), David Quesada (Arquitectura y Diseñoa), Susana Babiloni (Castellón Architects’ Association).

At the heart of ceramics are four fundamental elements: water, air, earth and fire. However, there is a hidden, distinctive ingredient that sets Spanish ceramics apart – respect. Every piece of European ceramics is made with respect for their people, ideas, environment and customers. This intangible quality plays a critical role in the craftsmanship and artistry of Spanish ceramics, making the entire process truly unique.

Respect For People

The European ceramic tile manufacturing industry accounts for over 53,000 direct jobs, with 15,000 of these being in Spain. For every direct job, it’s estimated that three to four indirect, additional jobs are created. The ceramic industry operates under strict labor regulations established by the European Union, guaranteeing fair working conditions, adherence to health and safety standards and the promotion of gender equality and non-discrimination. Spanish companies also offer extensive training courses and programs to foster continuing education and knowledge transfer among the industry.

Respect For Ideas

As a world leader in technological development, the Spanish ceramic industry prioritizes design and quality, which is supported by a strong investment in research development and innovation. The industry’s versatility and adaptability allow it to stand out globally, with one-third of its production exported outside of Europe. The Spanish sector also celebrates innovation, equipping companies with the knowledge and data they need to remain at the forefront of the latest technological advances and design trends.

Respect For the Environment

Spanish manufacturers adhere to strict quality and sustainability standards, implementing the newest available technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. This commitment demonstrates the industry’s dedication to optimizing energy use and reusing materials throughout the production process. Some of the key sustainability initiatives in the ceramics sector include the replacement of high-emission energy sources with cleaner solutions, recovering residual heat from kilns, significantly reducing water consumption and conducting life cycle analysis (LCA) to streamline manufacturing processes.

Respect for Customers

Spanish companies truly value the relationship they have with their customers, viewing them as lifelong partners rather than one-time buyers. Manufacturers display their dedication to creating lasting connections with their customers by investing in promotional tools that enhance product visibility in their distributor’s retail outlets, organizing training for their distributor’s sales networks and providing ongoing guidance and support to customers to ensure that their products are used correctly and effectively.

Spanish ceramic manufacturers, representing the Tile of Spain brand, traveled to Bologna, Italy, to present their latest collections at Cersaie, the International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings. This annual event, held from September 24 – 27, 2024, united architects, interior designers, specifiers, distributors, retailers and tile producers to discover the newest advancements and leading trends within the ceramic industry and preview what’s to come in the next year.

This year, Spain’s presence at Cersaie remained strong, with 96 Spanish companies showcasing innovative ceramic products during the weeklong fair. Second to the host country, the Spanish delegation of ceramic manufacturers ranked as the second-largest group of exhibitors.

The fair served as a platform to unveil new trends, innovative formats and enhanced technological capabilities from Spanish participants. The following is a highlight of the exceptional Spanish designs exhibited at Cersaie this year:

SENSORIAL DESIGN

Interior designers are going beyond the visual spectrum to curate spaces that engage all five senses. Thanks to advancements in digital decorative technology, ceramic manufacturers are now able to perfectly replicate natural textures and patterns, creating tiles with enhanced tactile and visual experiences. Furthermore, many designers are paying closer attention to the sense of smell. As ceramic tiles are naturally free of VOCs they do not retain orders, they assist with establishing an aromatically pleasing and clean environment.

DISCRETE TECH

As AI and smart home technology advance, the domestic automation sector is also rapidly growing, with a focus on enhancing quality of life and energy efficiency. Ceramic tile is essential in this evolution, thanks to its non-conductive properties that protect electrical systems while maintaining connectivity. Modern tiles now incorporate features like pressure-sensitive LED lighting and induction cooking, making it easier to blend cutting-edge technology with elegant design.

HOLISTIC EXPERIENCE

As the integration of technology in residential settings continues to rise, there’s a growing desire to incorporate natural elements into built environments. Reflecting on the urgent impacts of climate change on our environment, our connection to nature has become a central focus in architectural and interior design. Ceramics, with their inherent properties and moisture resistance, create an ideal environment for houseplants to thrive without the risk of deterioration. Additionally, advancements in digital technology enable the realistic recreation of organic details, ensuring that both the cladding and greenery in a space provide a rich biophilic experience.

POLARIZED DESIGN LANGUAGE

The design world is witnessing a resurgence of two contrasting design philosophies: Japandi minimalism on one end of the spectrum and Maximalism on the other. While the styles pose a juxtaposition in design, they are both being embraced, often in combination. Ceramic tile manufacturers are supporting this integrated design approach by streamlining their collections to showcase a unified color scheme. This stylistic decision makes it easier for clients to create harmonious spaces, regardless if they are opting for a maximalist or minimalist aesthetic or mixing the two. Many Spanish manufacturers are featuring consistent links in color and texture throughout their catalogues, ensuring that every style has an option, from the most modern and simple styles to the most ornate and classic motifs.

GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

While traditional square and rectangular tiles will never go out of style, the use of alternative geometric-shaped tiles is gaining momentum. Tile in these unique forms add a contemporary, playful twist on classic tile designs, creating intricate patterns and the illusion of movement across floors and walls. Spanish manufacturers are producing tiles in formats such as hexagons, diamonds, triangles and parallelograms, encouraging the freedom to experiment with a myriad of arrangements to personalize their spaces. With infinite layouts such as herringbone, honeycomb, basketweave and more, these tile styles offer endless possibilities for creating dynamic and visually intriguing designs.

Located on the picturesque coast of Alicante, Spain, Casa Llobatera is a modern two-story single-family residence with two lower levels, designed and built by Ramon Esteve Architectural Studio. The project is comprised of two rectangular floors that face the sea, providing stunning ocean views and creating an effortless connection with the home’s nearby landscape.

Each story of the home – one housing the ground floor and the other the first floor – is strategically positioned perpendicular to each other. This layout ensures distinct separation between the different uses of the spaces while preserving the visual continuity between them. Both levels offer unobstructed ocean views.

The ground floor serves as the hub for daytime activities of the house, featuring the living room, dining room, kitchen and porches. The upper floor is dedicated to all of the home’s bedrooms. Carefully configured to seamlessly integrate into the orography of its surrounding mountainous terrain, the basement contains the garage, indoor pool, changing rooms, storage rooms, gym, cinema room, yoga room, wine cellar and a large storage space. The second floor of the basement is reserved for the home’s utilities.

Ceramics are an integral part of the construction and design of this project, shaping the entire home’s design aesthetic. The residence features a remarkable material palette with exposed white concrete on its envelope and large-format porcelain stoneware, both on the inside and outside. Playing a central role in the design, the large-format porcelain stoneware covers all interior and exterior floors, pool areas, jacuzzi, hammam (steam bath) and vertical surfaces.

The same large-format porcelain stoneware, has been used in specific areas inside the home, to accentuate, integrate, harmonize and give continuity to the installation. This material can be found in the bathroom countertops, kitchen countertops, barbeques and the cantilevered steps of the stairs, elevating the unity and cohesion of the space.

As the perfect retreat from the summer heat, swimming pools provide a refreshing way to enjoy even the hottest days. When building your dream oasis, ceramic tiles are the ideal choice because of their remarkable technical qualities. They offer excellent resistance, durability and hygienic properties that help prevent mold and bacteria growth. Additionally, non-slip ceramic options enhance safety, making them essential for wet areas around the pool.

The benefits of ceramics extend beyond technical aspects; they are available in a vast range of colors and formats, providing infinite aesthetic possibilities. This diversity and versatility enable us to fully customize our outdoor settings according to our style preferences, creating areas that are not only functional and safe, but also visually captivating.

Embracing Tradition

Blue mosaics continue to be a popular and timeless choice for pool design. Emulating the look of ocean water, these tiles enhance the water’s sparkle, casting a striking visual effect. This style allows for the creation of custom patterns, making it easily adaptable to various architectural styles and design preferences.

Colorful Possibilities

Ceramics in alternating shades of green help pools harmonize with the surrounding environment. The incorporation of this color palette will establish a direct connection to nature, infusing outdoor spaces with a sense of life. With multiple shades available, from soft sages to bold emeralds, this dynamic color scheme empowers homeowners and interior designers to unleash their creativity in the pool.

Cerámica Mayor, Bali

Welcoming Neutrals

Incorporating ceramics in neutral tones of crisp whites, subtle browns and lush grays, evokes a sense of serenity in any setting. These colors facilitate an effortless transition between pools and their surroundings, establishing cohesive settings. The simplicity of these shades accommodates both minimalist and classic styles and are a perfect pairing with other decorative elements, ensuring that spaces remain balanced and inviting without becoming overwhelming.

Nature-Inspired Graphics

Ceramics with vivid graphics can transform pools into a uniquely personalized space. We recommend integrating tiles that showcase greenery and jungle motifs to add an organic and artisanal touch. In addition to decorating pools with distinct character, these ceramics also provide a visual connection to the neighboring landscape.

A Trip to the Tropics

Escape to a tropical destination without leaving the backyard with ceramics inspired by the fresh and vibrant colors of exotic locations. By combining hues of indigo blue, emerald green and pearly white, tiles can capture the aura of the tropics. Ceramics in these shades are not only picturesque, they also foster a unique sensory experience that elicits feelings of peace and tranquility.
